Hello, crafty friends! I played around this past weekend with Distress Embossing Glaze for the first time. I bought three colors quite awhile ago, but like most things in my craft room, they sat around for months feeling neglected. I first tried something that really highlights the translucency of these powders but wasn’t in love with my choices, so stay tuned for something else soon. For these three cards, I chose to use 3D embossing folders.
Basic Technique
For all three cards, I used the same technique and all three powders. I used Speckled Egg, Broken China, and Cracked Pistachio. I first inked up one side of the embossing folder with VersaMark ink. Because these folders are 3D, it is very easy to ink up only the raised parts of the embossing folder. For this technique, it really doesn’t matter which side you choose to ink up first. Just try to evenly swipe the ink pad over the raised edges, as opposed to pressing the pad down. Put a white piece of card stock into the embossing folder and then run the folder through your die cutting machine, according to your machine’s instructions. 3D folders can be a bit tricky to figure out the right sandwich – I usually just play around with the number of card stock shims that I use until I find the right amount of pressure for a particular folder.
I removed the card stock panel from the embossing folder and then sprinkled the Distress Glaze over it. Because I inked up the raised edges of the embossing folder, the VersaMark ends up in the “valleys” of the card stock when you run it through the die cutting machine. For these cards, I sprinkled a little bit of each color over the panel, trying to create a party mix of sorts. I then used my heat gun to emboss the glaze. Because my glaze was in the valleys of the card panel, the raised parts were still white, which in itself looks pretty cool. But I decided to swipe VersaMark over the raised edges and add a second round of glaze. That is where I really started to try to focus certain colors into certain areas, so that there would be some sort of differentiation between the raised parts of the card panel and the valleys. I really love the results. Because of the color blend and the watery look of it, I chose to pair them with some cute sea life stamps from La-La Land Crafts.

Card 3 is slightly different than the others, in that I started out with a light blue panel instead of white. Also, for my second round of embossing, I swiped the raised edges with white pigment ink instead of VersaMark and sprinkled a clear sparkle embossing powder over it. I really wanted to give it a watery, shimmery look.
That’s it for my cards today. I hope they bring a smile to your face. Leave a comment to let me know which one is your favorite. I am ready to buy more colors of this embossing glaze – maybe some pinks!
Wishing you all a crafty day!
